Wheelchair Battery Chargers
Batteries are thought be the most vital part of electric and powered wheelchairs. Their proper and smooth functioning depends on the charges used to revitalize them. A right choice of the chrgers for the battries not only provides better functions of the parts depended on the batteries but also increases the life-span of the batteries. The batteries used in the wheelchairs are of special kind. They are manufactured with the capability of being charged again and again. The recharging does not affect the efficiency of these batteries. They provide the same results as that of new batteries. The recharging ability in batteries is called ‘deep cycle’. Today, the batteries used in power and electric wheelchairs have deep cycling ability. They can drain entirely, take a charge, and are ready to perform their functions again. Generally speaking, a battery can be recharged almost three hundred times and it will provide the same power to the parts of the wheelchairs dependent on it.
To understand the functions of chargers, we should have knowledge of the kinds of batteries present in the market. With regard to wheelchairs, there are three kinds of batteries the people generally use in their wheelchairs. The first of them is a battery which is called wet battery. In this type of batteries, the chemical reaction to create the electric charge is performed with the fusion of lead and sulphuric acid. In case of wet batteries, distilled water is used and there is always a fear of leakage in these batteries. Wet batteries are the most economical batteries in the market but they require maintenance at times for proper functioning. The second type of batteries used for the wheelchairs is called Gel battery. The name is given to the battery due the matter or substance present inside the battery. This substance is like gel and is a compound of chemical matters i.e. sulphuric acid, fumed silica, pure water, and phosphoric acid. The gel batteries are little bit expansive to that of the wet batteries but are more efficient and powerful than the wet batteries.
The third type of batteries is AGM batteries. Soaked with an acid called electrolyte, AGM batteries is far more efficient than the previous two kinds. The mechanism inside the AGM battery is complex. These are also the most expansive type of batteries available in market but their superior quality and long working span is no match to their prices. All three kinds of batteries require three different kinds of chargers but you can also find chargers which have dual purpose. They can be used for both gel and wet batteries. The price range of these dual nature charges is quite affordable.
The availability of charges in the market is quite common and does not cause any botheration. The main concern of the users of battery dependent wheelchairs should be the search of the charges matched to their batteries. Furthermore, one should not wait for the total exhaustion of the batteries. In time re-charge guarantees proper working and life-span of the batteries. |
