Uses of Folding Wheelchairs

Uses of Folding Wheelchairs

Wheelchairs assume the role of a caregiver, a comrade and a friend for the disabled people, as they may not like or just be able to move without the assistance of these. Traveling outdoors always, therefore invokes a concern, as the special people may feel troubled without the eternal companions, the wheelchairs. On the other hand, carrying along, the conventional type wheelchairs may again be a hard nut to crack, owing to their huge size. Normal wheelchairs occupy a reasonable space, thus leaving usually little for anyone else. To cater for this problem, the user needed obviously a folding wheelchair, which performs all the functions, an ordinary wheelchair can perform. Moreover, it ought to be of such a material that could fold and squeeze down from its original size, whenever there was a requirement of carrying it to other places. Feeling the gravity of the needs, the researchers, worked out a model that could provide an answer to the worries of the users. It led to the invention of the folding wheelchairs. The folding wheelchairs are normally formed of the small metallic structural parts that are joined together in a uniquely organized manner. The frame consists of the flexible parts that can bend or fold to a certain extent. On the other hand, a few parts like seat and back are preferably made of strong cloth that easily folds to help in reducing the occupied space. This typical structure gives a wheelchair greater portability, which is a feature much liked by the users.

Folding wheelchairs are normally considered more comfortable than the rigid frame wheelchairs, due to their flexible structures. Even the special sportsmen, who participate in all sorts of athletic or court competitions, prefer to use the folding chairs, due to the flexibility, maneuverability and comfort level of these. Actually the flexible frame of the folding wheelchairs very easily accommodates all types of grounds. Moreover, it saves the user from all sorts of shock effects, being produced by the speedy mobility: the hallmark of a folding wheelchair. If to list down the positive points of the folding wheelchairs, these are portability, flexibility, adjustability, adaptability and quick mobility etc. These can be folded down to a reasonable size and thus are good for carrying from one place to the other even in a small car, thus causing minimum space problem for the passengers. These occupy minimum space at home, even when not in use. While folding, one needs not to remove any parts of these chairs, as the flexible frame simply reforms itself into another shape, with minimum effort. The flexibility feature keeps all the four wheels of these wheelchairs on ground, and therefore reduces the chances of downfall of the rider to the minimum. The swing away leg rests give the rider a more comfortable ride, as compared to that on a rigid frame wheelchair.

Critics of the folding wheelchairs, however, fear that the adjustable or removable parts of these be lost. Being heavier in weight and harder to push than the rigid frame wheelchairs are also considered the negative points, but flimsiness is the most critical observation against these.
